<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">The trailer for <a href="http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-04-29/the-long-and-tortured-road-to-don-cheadles-miles-davis-biopic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Miles Ahead</a> looked very good, and the film more than lived up to expectations when we went to see it at Picturehouse Central in London.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500"><a href="http://www.theguardian.com/film/2016/apr/02/has-to-be-hot-don-cheadle-miles-davis-miles-ahead" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Don Cheadle</a> does a fantastic job as director and star of this tribute to jazz great <a href="https://www.milesdavis.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Miles Davis</a>.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">The pacing of &#8216;Miles Ahead&#8217; is a perfect mix of action scenes and more reflective moments.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">The flashbacks are skilfully placed to keep the story firing along rather than interrupting the narrative flow.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">I knew that the music would be great, but I wasn’t expecting the whole film to be as terrific as it is.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">The pairing of Don Cheadle as Miles Davis and <a href="http://screenrant.com/miles-ahead-ewan-mcgregor-interview/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ewan McGregor</a> as the journalist pursuing him for a story works very well. There is a great chemistry between Cheadle and McGregor. This rapport enlivens the whole film.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">Although this is a loving tribute to Miles Davis, his flaws are also on display, particularly with regard to his treatment of his wife Frances Taylor.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">&#8216;Miles Ahead&#8217; was showing in screen 4 of Picturehouse Central.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">When it finished we dropped into the members’ bar where I glugged down an excellent pint of IPA.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">On leaving the cinema we crossed over Shaftesbury Avenue to the Japan Centre to get a couple of bottles of saké, including one very good <a href="http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2011/03/sake-what-is-honjozo-difference-between-honjozo-and-junmai.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">honjozo</a> from Niigata Prefecture.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">From the Japan Centre we headed along the Strand towards Fleet Street for what turned out to be a superb tapas meal at <a href="http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/minor-british-institutions-el-vinos-2026044.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">El Vino</a> wine bar.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">We had the five tapas for twenty quid option, washed down by a couple of glasses of white wine and rounded off with an excellent glass of port.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">El Vino has a great atmosphere, a cosy refuge from the bustle of London’s busy streets.</p>

<p style="font-style:normal;font-weight:500">By the time we left the wine bar the rain was bucketing down outside. But after the great film and the great meal, we didn’t mind at all.</p>
