David Kintore and Silver Screen Cities

Welcome to Silver Screen Cities!

This site’s blog, like the Silver Screen Cities book series, celebrates city cinema-going.

The Silver Screen Cities books spring from the notion that visiting cinemas and wandering around their neighbourhoods is a great way of getting to know different cities.

Here is an extract from Amazon Top 100 Reviewer Paul Allaer’s 4.5 star review of the Silver Screen Cities Tokyo & London book:

“The concept is as simple as it is brilliant: Kintore brings a mix of non-fiction travelogue and movie reviews… In all, there are about 65-70 chapters, each covering a different movie, in the entire book. I have to say this book was just a joy to read from start to finish. One thing that would’ve been a nice/reference-friendly touch would’ve been to include an index of the various theaters, bars/pubs, and eateries covered in the book, but it’s a minor quibble…  If you are into non-fiction writing, movies and foreign travel, you cannot go wrong with this. ‘Silver Screen Cities: Tokyo & London’ is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!”

Unlike conventional collections of film reviews, the Silver Screen Cities books are about the whole experience surrounding cinema-going rather than just a series of reviews. The film reviews sometimes take up only one or two paragraphs of each chapter. This is because city cinema-going is about more than just the film that is being shown. It is also about the cinema itself and the audience watching the film; the unique character and atmosphere of different cities with their bars, cafés, restaurants, and art galleries; and the feeling of freedom that comes from wandering a city’s streets before or after seeing a film.

The books published to date are set in Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, London, and Tokyo, although the Silver Screen Cities blog covers many other cities. You can view some sample chapters from each of the books here:
